Power transmission towers are constantly exposed to harsh environmental forces, making their bolted connections vulnerable to loosening and fatigue. Traditional inspection methods require workers to physically climb towers and tap bolts to listen for changes in sound. This manual approach is highly dangerous, inefficient (taking over two hours per tower), and relies heavily on subjective human hearing, failing to quantify the exact degree of looseness. To overcome these critical limitations, advanced AI acoustic tower detection technology has been developed, transforming grid maintenance from a risky manual chore into a precise, automated operation.

AI acoustic tower detection

How AI Acoustic Detection Works The system utilizes a "device-edge-cloud" collaborative architecture. The inspection process begins with active acoustic excitation. An automated source or a specialized hammer emits a controlled 10dB–80dB acoustic pulse to stimulate the tower structure. To capture the response, magnetically mounted industrial pickups using bone-conduction principles are deployed. These sensors, along with 0–10kHz accelerometers, effectively shield against environmental noise and capture the structural vibrations. A multi-channel collector then digitizes these signals at a sampling rate exceeding 20kHz.

Deep Learning Breaks the Noise Barrier The true power of this AI acoustic tower detection system lies in its deep learning algorithms. Traditional acoustic methods fail in strong winds or heavy rain. To solve this, the system extracts multi-dimensional features—including Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) and wavelet packet energy spectra—from the raw sound. These features are fed into advanced neural network models, such as CNN-LSTM and Vision Transformer (ViT). This allows the AI to filter out background noise (improving the signal-to-noise ratio by over 10 dB) and accurately infer the condition of the bolts.

Precision Grading and Localization Unlike basic tools that only detect if a bolt is "loose" or "tight," this AI system categorizes the condition into four distinct levels: normal, slight loosening (20–40% torque loss), moderate loosening (40–70%), and severe loosening (above 70%). The recognition accuracy exceeds 95%. For precise localization, the system integrates BeiDou positioning with tilt and settlement data, pinning down the exact fault location even in complex lattice structures.

Why It Matters for Grid Operators By deploying AI acoustic tower detection, utility companies achieve massive operational upgrades. Inspection time is slashed from over 2 hours to under 30 minutes, boosting efficiency by more than 8 times. Most importantly, operators remain safely on the ground, completely eliminating the risk of falls and electric shocks. The system also provides a 7-day advance warning of bolt deterioration, enabling true predictive maintenance. By turning subjective experience into objective, traceable data, this technology ensures the long-term stability and safety of the power grid.
